Although the German Shepherd Dog was originally bred in Germany at the end of the nineteenth century, it only appeared in any numbers in the UK in the 1920’s. It’s original ancestry was from shepherding and guarding dogs.
After the First World War, training of German Shepherd Dogs began to help war veterans with sight disabilities and in Germany they became the original guide dogs for the blind. In addition, they are natural guard dogs.
They are highly intelligent working dogs that are now used in a wide variety of roles especially with the police and armed forces around the world. This includes crowd control, drug detection, as part of rescue teams in earthquakes and avalanches, as well as competitive obedience and field trials.
The German Shepherd Dog was originally known as the Alsatian and despite its name being officially changed almost 25 years ago it is still sometimes referred to by this original name.
They are very loyal and protective, good with children and require regular and free exercise.

We appreciate that this description is rather brief. Ideally we would like each breed description to be written by someone in the professional dog world that can breath life and love into a description, and show the good sides and the bad.
