The Yorkshire Terrier is believed to be the result of cross-breeding between the English Black and Tan, the Skye Terrier and the Maltese and was developed by working men and their families in the nineteenth century.
The earlier Yorkshire Terriers were much larger than today's Yorkie and were originally bred to combat vermin in homes, workplaces, factories and even mines.
By the turn of the century selective breeding gradually created today's smaller dog, although its ability as a terrier has by no means diminished. Therefore he remains no softie and not unlike terriers, still enjoys hunting should the opportunity arise.
The Yorkie has now moved on to become a much loved pet and one of today's most popular breeds in the UK. It is best known for its long straight dark steel blue flowing coat and needs grooming daily from a very small puppy to maintain such looks.

We appreciate that this description is rather brief. Ideally we would like each breed description to be written by someone in the professional dog world that can breath life and love into a description, and show the good sides and the bad.
